Kunsthalle Wien, Contemporary art museum at Karlsplatz, Vienna, Austria.
Kunsthalle Wien Karlsplatz is a contemporary art museum inside a glass cube located on Karlsplatz, in the center of Vienna. It presents rotating exhibitions by international artists working in experimental formats, covering a wide range of media and approaches.
Kunsthalle Wien opened in 1992 in a windowless, initially blue-and-yellow container structure by Adolf Krischanitz on Karlsplatz, controversial before it even opened. In May 2001 it moved into the Museumsquartier, into a brick annex by Ortner & Ortner joining the former Winterreithalle of the Hofstallungen, between the Leopold Museum and mumok. The container was dismantled and replaced by a glass exhibition space, a project space until 2012 and an equal venue since 2013.
The building sits at one of the city's most central squares, giving it strong visibility among commuters and passersby. The glass walls make the exhibitions partly visible from outside, which naturally draws in people who were not planning to visit.
The museum is right on Karlsplatz and easy to reach on foot from the Karlsplatz metro station. The entrance is at ground level, and the building is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility.
The glass pavilion that replaced the yellow container at Karlsplatz in 2001 served as the Kunsthalle's project space until 2012 and has been a full exhibition and event venue since 2013. The daily Der Standard called this cube a cheap architecture as medium and a test tube for artistic interventions.
