Bärenmühle, Multifamily residential building in Wieden district, Vienna, Austria.
Bärenmühle is a multifamily residential building in the Wieden district of Vienna, located at Rechte Wienzeile 1-1A next to the Naschmarkt. The structure contains apartments arranged throughout the building and sits in a central position within the urban landscape.
Bärenmühle was built in 1937 by architects Heinrich Schmid and Hermann Aichinger, replacing an old mill that had operated since 1705. The new construction ended the mill's use at this location after nearly 90 years of activity.
The building takes its name from a neighboring tavern called 'Zum schwarzen Bären' rather than from local folklore about a bear encounter. The name has stayed with the place even though the original tavern no longer exists.
Access to the building is from Rechte Wienzeile, a main street with multiple transportation connections nearby. Visitors should note this is a private residential building and only the exterior is viewable.
Poet Ignaz Franz Castelli lived in the original mill building until his death in 1862, giving the location literary significance. His residence connected Vienna's literary history to this modest address on Wienzeile.
