Altes Rathaus, Medieval town hall at Hauptplatz, Austria.
The Altes Rathaus is a municipal building on Hauptplatz with an arcaded courtyard featuring stone columns that rises along the eastern side of Linz's central square. The structure displays both medieval and baroque architectural elements.
The building was constructed after the city fire of 1509 following designs by Master Christoph and shaped the city's appearance for centuries. A baroque facade was added in 1658 to modernize its look.
The entrance displays portrait panels honoring notable figures connected to Linz, including composer Anton Bruckner and astronomer Johannes Kepler. These faces reflect the city's pride in the achievements of its most famous sons.
The building houses a tourist information center inside that helps guide visitors around the city. Check opening hours before your visit to plan your time accordingly.
The foyer floor features aerial photographs of Linz embedded into it, creating a walkable map of the entire city area. This original design allows visitors to understand the city's spatial layout in an unusual way.
