The castle combines Romanesque and Gothic architecture with Italian Renaissance elements, featuring terracotta mosaics depicting mythological themes throughout its structure.
First documented in 1242 as fortress Schala, the castle underwent major renovations between 1456 and 1614 under the Losenstein family's ownership.
The museum presents annual exhibitions on diverse subjects, from Venice's history to Viking life, displaying historical artifacts, weapons, films, and postcards.
Located 5 kilometers from Melk, the castle welcomes visitors from April to December with admission fees ranging between 6 and 18 euros.
Two large dragon sculptures at the entrance serve as slides for children, while Renaissance apple orchards surround the castle grounds.
