Schallaburg, Renaissance castle in Schollach, Austria.

Schallaburg is a castle in Schollach that combines Romanesque and Gothic architecture with Italian Renaissance elements. Terracotta mosaics depicting mythological scenes adorn the structure, giving the building its distinctive appearance.

The castle began as a fortress called Schala, first recorded in 1242 and later transformed under the Losenstein family. Major rebuilding between 1456 and 1614 shaped it into the Renaissance form visible today.

The museum hosts rotating exhibitions on diverse subjects, from Venetian history to Viking culture, with historical objects and artworks displayed throughout. These changing shows shape how people experience the place on different visits.

The castle is located near Melk and opens to visitors from April through December, allowing you to choose the season for a comfortable visit. There is much to explore, so plan time for a full walk-through of the grounds and buildings.

Two large dragon sculptures at the entrance serve as slides for children, playfully blending history with fun. The surrounding orchards feature heritage apple varieties from the Renaissance, shaping the rural landscape around the castle.
