Palais Esterházy, Baroque palace in Innere Stadt, Austria
Palais Esterházy is a Baroque palace in Vienna's Innere Stadt featuring symmetrical architecture with an ornate facade decorated with elaborate stonework and large windows spanning multiple floors. The building houses various commercial tenants today and functions as a mixed-use structure.
Construction of Palais Esterházy began between 1685 and 1695 under the direction of the first prince of the Esterházy family. The building was created by consolidating fourteen separate properties into a single representative residence.
The cellar restaurant Esterházykeller keeps alive Vienna's centuries-old wine tradition, and visitors can experience the historic rooms with their special character. The place still connects dining culture with the building's history in a natural way.
The palace is located at Wallnerstraße 4 in Vienna's first district and is easily accessible by public transport. The interior spaces are partially open to visitors, particularly the historic cellar restaurant which is regularly open.
The palace was built on a site that previously held fourteen separate properties, which were laboriously consolidated into one impressive building. This consolidation of multiple plots was an ambitious undertaking typical of the prestigious city palaces of Baroque Vienna.
