Palais Auersperg, Baroque palace in Josefstadt, Austria
Palais Auersperg is a Baroque city palace in Vienna's Josefstadt district with elaborate interior decoration. The rooms feature marble finishes, crystal chandeliers, and an oval-shaped hall that spans multiple floors, known as the Rosenkavalier Room.
The palace was built in the 17th century and later acquired by Prince Johann Adam Auersperg, who had it redesigned by prominent architects. These renovations shaped its appearance for centuries to come.
The palace served as a venue for music performances and private gatherings of Vienna's nobility over centuries. Visitors can still see the rooms where artists and aristocrats once came together.
The building sits on Lerchenfelderstrasse and is well connected by public transport, including the Rathaus subway station and tram line 46 nearby. Parking spaces are limited, especially on weekdays.
During World War II, members of the resistance group O5 used the palace cellars for secret meetings. These activities later helped prevent Vienna's destruction.
