Wagrain is a municipality in Salzburg situated in a high valley between the Salzach and Enns rivers. The area is divided into four cadastral districts: Hof, Hofmarkt, Schwaighof, and Vorderkleinarl.
The settlement was first recorded in 1243 as Wakrein and began as a mining area. By the early 18th century, it had become a center of Crypto-protestantism.
