Burg Wagrain, Medieval castle ruins in Wagrain, Austria
The castle ruins stand on a hill at 840 meters above sea level, protected by steep slopes on all sides of the terrain.
The Goldegg family constructed the castle around 1200 to guard the passage between Salzach Valley and Enns Valley, until its destruction in 1322.
Archaeological excavations since 2006 have revealed numerous artifacts including ceramics, wall remains, and coins that document life in medieval Austria.
The castle grounds cover an area of 60 by 80 meters, with remaining southwestern walls reaching heights of 3 meters.
The fortress walls measured 2.7 meters in thickness, demonstrating the advanced military architecture of medieval Austrian fortifications.
