Horn

Horn is the administrative center for the Horn District in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria. The town sits on elevated terrain and functions as the seat of district government serving the surrounding communities.

In 1608, Protestant nobles founded the League of Horn to negotiate religious freedoms with the emperor during the Counter-Reformation period. This event established the town as a center for regional influence and political negotiation.

The Sgraffitohaus displays traditional scratched and painted decorations on its facade that show how local craftspeople once decorated their homes. As you walk through town, you notice how residents and visitors encounter these ornamental walls as living parts of the streetscape.

The town is walkable on foot with a compact center where main buildings and shops are grouped together. The hilly terrain requires some effort depending on your route, especially if you plan to explore the broader surroundings.

The Grass tower connects the town to the regional history of Johann Georg Grasel, a historical adventurer and outlaw. Meanwhile, the ruins of Kollmitz castle overlook the Thaya river, a detail many visitors pass by without noticing.
