Saint Nicholas church Feldkirch, Gothic cathedral in Feldkirch, Austria

Saint Nicholas church is a brick Gothic cathedral in the heart of Feldkirch, in the Austrian region of Vorarlberg. The building has a tall nave with pointed arches and double-deck vaults, along with several side chapels and sacristies.

The original parish church was rebuilt after several city fires in the 14th and 15th centuries, with architect Hans Sturm leading the work from 1478. The building became a cathedral in 1968 when the Diocese of Feldkirch was established.

Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of the church, lends his name to the building, a dedication that reflects a long tradition in this part of Austria. The interior is used regularly for services, and the building acts as a gathering point for the local Catholic community.

The church sits in the center of Feldkirch and is easy to reach on foot from most parts of the old town. Some interior areas may not be fully accessible by wheelchair due to the age of the building, so it is worth checking beforehand if needed.

The roofline of the church shows clear differences in height between the nave and the choir, a visible sign that the two sections were not built at the same time. These differences are easy to spot from outside and tell the story of the repairs carried out after the fires.
