Description

History
In the thirteenth century the Montforts founded the settlement with a hilltop castle securing southern trade routes. The town soon received municipal rights and grew into a junction between Alpine lands and the Lake Constance area.
Culture
The old town draws visitors with cobblestone lanes and arcaded walkways, while local shops and restaurants occupy spaces beneath the arches. The name recalls the Counts of Montfort, who shaped the region over centuries.

The train station connects the town with Bregenz, Buchs, and Chur, with trains running roughly hourly during the day. The town center can be easily explored on foot, while several bus lines serve suburbs and nearby villages.
