Eschnerberg, Mountain ridge in Feldkirch, Austria and Schellenberg, Liechtenstein
Eschnerberg is a mountain ridge that stretches across the border between Austria and Liechtenstein, rising to about 700 meters in height. Several marked trails run across the different slopes and offer access from both sides of the international boundary.
Archaeological digs have shown that people lived on this mountain since the Bronze Age, pointing to a very long history of human settlement. In medieval times, a fortress was built on the ridge and shaped the region for centuries.
The ridge serves as a meeting point for communities on both sides, where seasonal traditions and local celebrations happen throughout the year. People from the area use the slopes for walking and foraging, keeping these practices alive as part of daily life.
The ridge is best explored on marked trails that begin from Feldkirch and Schellenberg, with information boards placed along the routes. Parking is available at the main entry points, and the mountain is accessible year-round, though snow in winter may change conditions.
The summit holds ruins of a medieval castle called Wildschloss, from which you can see both countries at the same time. This fortress once served as an important outpost and today stands as a remarkable reminder of the border history shared by these lands.
