Church St. Michael, Cemetery church in Tisis district, Feldkirch, Austria

St. Michael Church stands on a hill with a nave, a wider choir section, and a tower topped with a hipped roof on the south side. The building integrates a cemetery, making it a central point for burial traditions and memorial gatherings in the community.

The church received its first written mention in 1218, establishing its long history as a religious center. Over centuries, it served as the parish church for surrounding areas of Feldkirch, connecting local history with its religious role.

The high altar dates from 1680; its altarpiece of Saint Michael is inscribed "W K Dornbirn 1862". The side altars hold paintings by Franz Xaver Bobleter: Saint John the Evangelist (1860) and Saint Dominic with the Virgin and Child (1859). A painting by Mathias Jehly from 1816 shows Mary with the Child and the Fourteen Holy Helpers, with the Battle of Tisis and an Antonius chapel in the background.

The church sits on a hill above Tisis, surrounded by the cemetery, with the main portal facing west under a large wooden porch. The three bells in the tower are still rung by hand, so expect bell ringing at service times. The ossuary lies in the lower storey of the choir, right of the cemetery entrance.

The facade preserves 14th-century frescoes showing Saint George with a dragon and other biblical scenes painted directly on the building. These medieval wall paintings remain integrated into the architecture and reveal earlier artistic traditions of the region.
