Burg Grub is a castle ruin on a hilltop in Irnfritz-Messern from the Middle Ages. It consists of tower remains, palace walls, and a reconstructed chapel sitting at about 467 meters elevation.
The castle was built in the 11th century and served the Counts of Poigen as a stronghold. In 1373, Duke Albrecht III besieged it, which changed its role forever.
The castle shows its medieval building style and feels like a witness to distant times. Visitors can see how the stones and walls from that era have lasted until today.
The ruin is located at Grub 13 and can be viewed from the outside, with parking available for easy access. It is wise to wear sturdy shoes and explore the grounds with care.
A private citizen bought the abandoned castle in 1970 to save it from demolition and started restoration work. This rescue by one person shows how much the site depended on individual initiative.
