Bregenz Forest Railway, Heritage railway in Vorarlberg, Austria
The Bregenz Forest Railway is a narrow-gauge line in Vorarlberg that connects Bezau with Schwarzenberg through the western Alpine mountains. The route passes through forested slopes and small villages with traditional architecture.
The railway opened in 1902 and served as a vital link connecting Bregenz to the Bregenz Forest region. It ceased operations in 1983 before being revived as a heritage service for travelers and tourists.
The railway shows how mountain communities once connected through transport and daily travel. Visitors today experience how people in these villages moved between towns and stayed in contact with one another.
The railway operates during the warmer months with regular service and several departures throughout the day. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and prepare for cooler temperatures at higher elevations.
The route climbs about 240 meters over its short distance and historically faced frequent landslides and rockfalls along the tracks. This engineering challenge made the railway a notable achievement for early mountain railway construction.
