Schloss Schernberg, Medieval castle in Schwarzach im Pongau, Austria
Schloss Schernberg is a castle situated on a hilltop two kilometers above Schwarzach im Pongau town center, overlooking the Salzach River valley. The complex includes the main structure alongside residential buildings and service facilities, now operating as a modern care residence.
The castle originated from a simple watchtower first mentioned in 1193 and was expanded into a fortified structure by the noble family between 1370 and 1550. In the 19th century, Cardinal Friedrich von Schwarzenberg purchased the deteriorated fortress and established a residential care facility.
The chapel inside the castle displays religious artworks that reflect its connection to care work rooted in faith. Visitors can see how the place embodies Christian values of compassion.
The site sits at an elevated position requiring some effort to reach from below, but the view into the valley rewards the climb. Visits are possible but should be arranged in advance since the grounds remain in active use as a care facility and are not always open to the public.
During World War II, Sister Anna Bertha Königsegg used hidden passages and protective measures to help residents escape deportation. Despite her efforts, 151 people were forcibly taken away, a tragedy that marked this place's role during that dark period.
