Pyramidenkogel Tower, Wooden observation tower in Keutschach am See, Austria
Pyramidenkogel Tower is a wooden observation tower in Keutschach am See, Austria, rising from a forested hill above Lake Wörthersee. The construction uses 16 larch supports arranged in an elliptical footprint and held together by 80 diagonal steel braces.
The structure opened in 2013 and replaced an earlier concrete tower from 1968. The new construction marked a turn toward sustainable materials and contemporary engineering in the region.
The tower takes its name from the mountain beneath it, which owes its shape to a sandstone cone. Visitors come here to enjoy the wide view over the Carinthian lake district and experience the combination of modern construction and natural surroundings.
Visitors reach the platforms either by elevator that holds up to 20 people or by climbing the 441 wooden steps. The upper levels offer views in every direction, while the open construction leaves them exposed to wind.
Inside runs the highest indoor slide in Europe, which spirals down 120 meters (394 feet). Visitors can descend at speeds up to 25 kilometers per hour (16 mph).
