Judenplatz Holocaust Memorial, Holocaust memorial in Innere Stadt, Vienna, Austria.
The Judenplatz Holocaust Memorial is a reinforced concrete memorial standing in a public square in the city center. The structure resembles a closed library with book spines facing inward.
The site came about after a design competition won by artist Rachel Whiteread and was unveiled on October 25, 2000. The project emerged from an initiative to create a lasting marker for the victims.
The memorial displays inscriptions and text that honor Austrian Jewish victims. Visitors can read the engravings on the concrete structure and see the names of concentration camps marked there.
The memorial is located on Judenplatz and is easily reached, as several subway lines stop nearby. A good sense of direction in the city center helps when visiting this location.
Beneath the memorial lie archaeological remains of a medieval synagogue destroyed in 1420. These hidden layers connect different periods of Jewish history at this location.
