Old Synagogue

The Old Synagogue in Judenplatz was a medieval Jewish place of worship consisting of multiple rooms. The excavated foundations reveal a double-aisled structure with several sections that organized the space.

This synagogue was built in the middle of the 13th century and served as a religious center for Vienna's Jewish community. After its destruction, only the foundations remained underground until archaeologists rediscovered them in the 1990s.

The name Judenplatz reflects the Jewish community that lived here for centuries. The visible foundations show how the space was used and what role this site held in people's daily religious life.

The site is located in the old city center and is easily reached on foot, with the foundations visible through a memorial and on-site museum. Visitors should allow time to read the information boards that explain the history and structure of the place.

The synagogue had a hexagonal Bimah platform in the center where lamps provided light during prayers. This architectural detail shows how thoughtfully the interior was designed for religious ceremonies.
