Thaneller, Mountain summit in Lechtal Alps, Austria
Thaneller is a summit in the Lechtal Alps of western Austria, standing at 2,341 meters (7,680 ft). It sits in the Tyrolean Außerfern region and is visible from several surrounding valleys.
Thaneller served as a natural boundary between Alpine communities from medieval times onward, influencing how the surrounding territory was divided over the centuries. Its position made it a lasting reference point for the valleys on either side.
Local mountaineering clubs organize regular group ascents to the Thaneller summit, maintaining traditional Alpine climbing practices throughout the seasons.
Marked trails lead to the top from several starting points, with the shortest route taking around four hours on foot. Conditions at altitude can change fast, so checking the forecast before heading out is a good habit.
On a clear day the summit offers views into both the Lechtal and the Allgau Alps at the same time, covering a wide arc in all directions. This makes it one of the few spots where two distinct Alpine groups can be seen together from a single point.
