Riegersburg Castle, Medieval fortress in Riegersburg, Austria.
The castle stands on a 482-meter volcanic rock formation in southeastern Styria, featuring 108 rooms within its three-kilometer defensive walls.
Construction began in 1122 with Knight Rudiger von Hohenberg, and between 1637 and 1653 Lady Galler transformed it into a substantial fortification.
The castle museums present exhibits about regional history, weapons, and witch trials that occurred in the surrounding area during medieval times.
Visitors can access 25 of the castle's rooms through guided tours, with options to climb by foot or take an alternative path.
The structure incorporates basalt from an extinct volcano that ceased activity approximately two million years before construction began.
