Riegersburg Castle, Medieval fortress in Riegersburg, Austria.
Riegersburg Castle is a fortress built atop a 482-meter-high basalt rock formation in southeastern Styria. The structure contains 108 rooms enclosed within three kilometers of defensive walls.
Construction began in 1122 under Knight Rudiger von Hohenberg. Between 1637 and 1653, Lady Galler expanded it into a major fortification.
The castle museums display exhibits about regional history and witch trials that took place in the surrounding area during medieval times. Visitors can see how these historical events shaped the collections and stories told throughout the rooms.
Visitors can explore 25 of the castle's rooms through guided tours, with the option to climb on foot or take an alternative path. The accessibility varies depending on the route chosen and the level of physical effort involved.
The structure uses basalt from an extinct volcano that stopped erupting approximately two million years before construction began. This geological foundation makes the castle's position exceptionally stable and rare.
