Donauuferbahn, Heritage railway line in Lower Austria, Austria
The Donauuferbahn is a railway line stretching approximately 108 kilometers between Krems an der Donau and Mauthausen along the northern bank of the Danube. The route follows the river valley through wine-growing regions and passes historic locations that shape the landscape.
The line was built in the 19th century as part of Austrian railway expansion, connecting Danube-side communities for trade and passenger travel. It later became an important transportation link for the region's economic activity.
The line connects several local wine-producing areas and carries passengers through the distinctive terraced vineyards that define the region. Along the way, travelers pass historic villages and religious sites embedded in the landscape, revealing how communities have lived and worked here for generations.
Two operators manage the line: Austrian Federal Railways operates the western section while NÖVOG oversees the eastern part. Weekend trains run multiple times per day, giving visitors flexible travel options.
The single-track standard gauge line runs through distinctive landscapes where the railway and river sit very close together. What makes the journey special is passing directly along river edges where passengers can catch glimpses of monastery buildings nestled in river bends.
