Schloss Mattighofen

Schloss Mattighofen is a two-story square building with plain facades located at Stadtplatz 1 in the heart of the town center. Today the municipal administration occupies the first floor while a restaurant operates in the western wing, giving the castle ongoing community use.

The building was originally constructed as a royal castle in 788 under the Agilolfing dynasty before King Heinrich II transferred it to the Bishopric of Bamberg in 1007. This early transfer shaped the settlement's development for centuries to come.

The castle shapes the town center of Mattighofen as a focal point and administrative seat, where visitors can sense the link between past and daily community life. The place shows how a historical structure continues to serve as a living center for the town.

The location on Stadtplatz in the town center makes it easy to find and access, as the building dominates the main square. Visitors can enter the restaurant in the western wing to experience the interior and see how the castle functions today.

In 1799 the structure underwent a radical transformation from its original fortified design to a building in Italian style, removing all medieval defensive features. This dramatic architectural shift remains visible today and tells of a new vision for how the place would be used.
