Schloss Mattighofen is a two-story square building with plain facades located at Stadtplatz 1 in the heart of the town center. Today the municipal administration occupies the first floor while a restaurant operates in the western wing, giving the castle ongoing community use.
The building was originally constructed as a royal castle in 788 under the Agilolfing dynasty before King Heinrich II transferred it to the Bishopric of Bamberg in 1007. This early transfer shaped the settlement's development for centuries to come.
