Dr.-Heinrich-Hackel-Hütte, Mountain refuge in Werfenweng, Austria
The Dr.-Heinrich-Hackel-Hütte is a mountain refuge at 1531 meters on the southern slope of Tennengebirge overlooking the Salzach valley and Hochkönig peaks. The hut provides seven beds and a dormitory sleeping 20 people, along with basic washing facilities.
The hut was established as a stopping point along several long-distance hiking routes including the Via Alpina, E4 Alpine route, and Austrian Long-Distance Trail 01. This strategic location makes it a crucial resting place for walkers covering extended distances across the mountains.
The hut serves regional Alpine dishes prepared by the managers using traditional recipes passed down through generations. These meals reflect how people in mountain communities have eaten and lived for centuries.
The hut operates from May through October and accepts only cash as electronic payment options are not available. It is wise to bring sufficient cash and confirm opening times before visiting.
From the sunny terrace, visitors can see distant peaks like Kitzsteinhorn and Großglockner on clear days. This far-reaching view is made possible by the elevated location and the crisp alpine air.
