Pulverturm, Medieval fortified tower in Krems, Austria
The Pulverturm stands as a massive round tower at the northeast corner of Krems, forming part of the former city fortifications.
Built in 1477 as a gunpowder storage facility, the tower remained operational until 1752 when authorities moved the explosives storage to Gneixendorf for safety reasons.
The structure represents medieval military architecture with its strategic position and defensive capabilities, contributing to the architectural heritage of Lower Austria.
The tower features a conical roof added during the 18th century, replacing the original flat design that characterized its early defensive purpose.
The tower's position outside the main city walls served as a safety measure, preventing potential explosion damage while maintaining quick access to stored gunpowder.
