Palais Chotek, Renaissance Revival palace in Alsergrund, Vienna, Austria.
Palais Chotek is a Renaissance Revival palace located in Alsergrund, Vienna, Austria. The building features a broad main structure flanked by two narrow side wings and a facade ornamented with three shallow projections and fluted pilasters that define its classical character.
Count Otto von Chotek commissioned architect Lothar Abel to build this palace between 1871 and 1874. The original structure was constructed as a single-story building that would later undergo expansions and transformations to serve new purposes.
The dining room displays an ornate coffered ceiling made from oak, maple, and pear wood crafted by Franz Schönthaler. This wooden craftsmanship, paired with neo-Renaissance wall panels, reflects the interior design values that guided the palace's original inhabitants.
The palace has housed the Friedrich Otto Schmidt furniture company since 1896, operating as a design showroom within restored historical spaces. Visitors should be aware that access is primarily for design consultations, though viewings of the interior may be arranged with advance notice.
The room doors feature handcrafted box locks, a rare example of antique locking mechanisms from the period. A black marble fireplace adorned with oxidized silver decorative elements serves as another striking detail from the palace's original interior design scheme.
