Wiesberg Castle

Wiesberg Castle sits elevated between the Paznaun and Stanzer Valleys, commanding views of the Trisanna River and the surrounding Alpine landscape. The structure rises prominently above the valley and remains visible from numerous hiking paths and roads.

The castle began as a medieval fortification and served as a strategic defense point for the region over centuries. In 1809, hundreds of local militia defended it against attacks from Bavaria and France.

The castle displays medieval Austrian architecture and shapes how the Paznaun region appears to travelers passing through. It remains a recognizable landmark for anyone driving the Silvretta-Hochalpenstraße or walking in this valley.

The castle remains privately owned, so visitors cannot tour inside, but the exterior is viewable from hiking paths. A roughly 5.4-kilometer trail from Tobadill provides close views and different angles of the castle.

In May 1945, preliminary armistice discussions took place here while the castle was under German Army Command. This makes it a location of significance in the closing weeks of the war in Europe.
