Kranichberg Castle, Medieval castle in Kirchberg am Wechsel, Austria
Kranichberg is a stone castle standing on a hill southeast of Gloggnitz, with an almost square shape and a five-story tower that was typical for fortifications of its kind. The three-story main building is surrounded by thick walls that show signs of different construction phases over time.
The Lords of Kranichberg established this fortress in the 13th century as representatives of the Counts of Formbach and Pitten. Ownership changed several times after 1352, with the monastery of St. Pölten eventually taking control in the late Middle Ages.
The castle takes its name from the bird-bearing hill where it stands, and visitors can see how medieval stone walls blend with Baroque elements added after a fire in the 1700s. This mix of styles tells the story of how the building changed hands and purposes over time.
The castle sits on a hilltop, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended and the climb can be demanding. The ongoing renovation work for the planned doll and toy museum may affect access to certain areas, so checking ahead is useful.
During World War II, the castle served as shelter for German resettlers from the Dobruja region in southeastern Europe. After the war ended, the Archdiocese of Vienna took charge of the building, redirecting its purpose in a completely new direction.
