Burg Kropfsberg

Burg Kropfsberg is a castle ruin perched on a ridge overlooking the Alpbach Valley at roughly 526 meters in elevation. Two sturdy defensive towers remain standing, along with fragments of a gothic chapel and traces of the former cistern system.

A Salzburg archbishop ordered the castle built in the early 12th century as a base for managing territorial holdings in the region. It later hosted negotiations between rival powers before eventually falling into disuse.

During the 15th century, the castle served as a diplomatic venue where Tyrol and Bavaria resolved territorial disputes through negotiations.

The location sits on an elevated ridge, so sturdy footwear and some stamina are helpful for the climb, especially in wet conditions. The ruin remains accessible year-round without gates or barriers, though summer visits offer easier hiking conditions.

The castle grounds extended across 26,000 square meters and contained living quarters for up to 80 people during its peak operation period.
