Burg Lichtenwerth, Medieval castle in Münster, Austria.
Burg Lichtenwerth is a medieval fortress in the Munster Valley with a rectangular layout consisting of an outer western section with farm buildings and an eastern three-story keep. The structure combines residential elements with defensive features typical of fortifications from that period.
The fortress was built in the 12th century in the Inn Valley region and retained its Romanesque architecture with minimal changes since the 14th century. This continuity makes it a rare example of an unaltered medieval defensive structure.
The castle chapel features stucco decorations from the 18th century that reflect the taste of that era. These ornaments still shape the interior spaces today.
The fortress is privately owned by the Inama-Sternegg family and cannot be entered, so visitors must limit themselves to viewing it from outside. The best views can be had from the paths surrounding the site where you can see its overall form.
The fortress is the only moated castle in all of Tyrol and sits strategically between the municipalities of Munster and Brixlegg. This rare construction method sets it apart from other medieval structures in the region.
