Burg Oberkapfenberg, Medieval castle in Kapfenberg, Austria.
Burg Oberkapfenberg is a medieval castle built on a hill above the town of Kapfenberg in Styria, Austria. It has thick stone walls, several towers, a courtyard, and a chapel inside the complex.
The castle was founded in 1173 by the Herren von Kapfenberg and was later rebuilt in the Renaissance style during the 16th century. Those renovations shaped much of its current appearance.
The castle holds a falconry center where visitors can watch birds of prey fly during live demonstrations. These shows give a sense of how trained birds were used in hunting centuries ago.
Reaching the castle requires a walk uphill, so comfortable shoes are a good idea before you start. Guided tours are available, but you can also explore the site on your own.
Inside the castle, there is a collection of medieval weapons and armor that shows how warriors were equipped at the time. Some of the pieces on display date back to when the castle was still inhabited.
