Burg Piberstein, Rock castle in Helfenberg, Austria
Piberstein Castle extends across multiple levels around a massive rock formation, featuring defensive towers and an irregular palace structure against the natural stone.
Brothers Ruga and Arnold von Piberstein constructed the castle between 1200 and 1250 as vassals of the Lords of Griesbach and Waxenberg.
The castle functions as a regional cultural center, hosting musical performances, art exhibitions, and literary readings throughout the calendar year.
Guided tours run from May through October on Sunday afternoons for groups of 10 or more visitors with advance reservations required.
The castle survived a siege by Hussite forces in 1427 and maintained its defensive capabilities through the 16th century Renaissance modifications.
