Burg Piberstein

Burg Piberstein is a castle complex that extends across multiple levels around a massive rock formation, featuring defensive towers and an irregular palace structure. The buildings incorporate the natural stone as a primary construction element, creating a complex and asymmetrical outline.

The castle was built between 1200 and 1250 by brothers Ruga and Arnold von Piberstein as vassals of the Lords of Griesbach and Waxenberg. During the Renaissance in the 16th century, modifications were made to preserve its defensive capabilities.

The castle hosts musical performances, art exhibitions, and literary readings that draw people from the surrounding region. Visitors can experience the building during these events and see how the historic site connects with contemporary cultural life.

Tours run from May through October on Sunday afternoons for groups of 10 or more visitors with advance reservations required. It is helpful to contact ahead and confirm the meeting point before traveling to the castle.

The castle withstood a siege by Hussite forces in 1427 and earned a reputation as an unbreakable fortress. This resilience made it a notable example of medieval defensive engineering in the region.
