Burg Wildberg, Medieval castle ruin in Kirchschlag bei Linz, Austria
Burg Wildberg is a medieval castle ruin in Kirchschlag bei Linz situated on a ridge in the Haselgraben valley. The site includes a keep, several building sections, and walls that show different construction phases.
The castle was first documented in 1145 and played an important role as a fortress along a medieval trade route. A major fire in 1654 destroyed large sections, prompting reconstruction of a residential area between 1664 and 1665.
The ruins display a mix of Gothic and Renaissance styles that reflect different building periods. You can see how the architecture changed over time as you walk through the remains.
The ruins are situated on private property of the Starhemberg family and are not freely accessible. Visits are only possible during special cultural events held throughout the year.
King Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia was held captive here in 1394 during a period of shifting political power. This royal imprisonment is one of the few documented events that highlight the castle's political importance.
