Ruine Hohenwang, Medieval castle ruin in Langenwang, Austria
Ruine Hohenwang stretches across roughly 90 meters along a hilltop at 650 meters elevation and displays preserved sections of shield walls and gate structures. The fortress leveraged natural cliff faces as defense rather than relying on a traditional tower design.
The castle was built between 1122 and 1160 by Erchinger I. von Landesere and suffered earthquake damage in the late 18th century. World War II bombing caused additional destruction to the structure.
The ruins served as an administrative hub and once housed a resident priest who helped spread Christianity throughout the upper Muerztal valley.
The site is reachable through marked hiking trails and is maintained by the Association Hohenwang Castle. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and allow time for the uphill walk.
The fortress had three secured gates equipped with slip gate mechanisms, creating multiple layers of defense. This multi-gate system was uncommon for castles of that era and reflected a sophisticated approach to security.
