Sonnenberg, Mountain summit in Hornstein, Austria.
Sonnenberg is a mountain in the Leitha range near Hornstein that rises to 484 meters (1,588 feet) and contains multiple forest trails winding through its slopes. The terrain is covered with trees that create natural corridors for walking.
The mountain served as a lookout point in earlier times, and traces of an old Hungarian watchtower still remain near the summit. This structure tells of the area's strategic importance long ago.
The name refers to the sun-facing slopes that draw people from the village to explore its ridges. Locals and visitors walk here to enjoy changing seasons and wide views across the region.
A circular route of about 8 to 9 kilometers starts near Hornstein cemetery and returns to the same point, taking between two to two and a half hours to walk. Sturdy shoes help on steeper sections where roots and loose ground appear.
On clear days the summit offers an expansive view that stretches from Wienerwald forests all the way to the shores of Neusiedlersee lake. Mountains like Schneeberg and Hohe Wand appear on the horizon, marking the border region between Austria and Hungary.
