Situated on an elevated position, the stone remnants of Ruine Hornstein reveal the foundations and walls of a former Hungarian border fortress.
King Louis the Great of Hungary commissioned the construction of this defensive fortress between 1340 and 1345 to protect the western Hungarian border.
The ruins stand as a testament to medieval military architecture, with the remaining structures protected under Austrian heritage preservation laws.
Visitors can reach the ruins through a 10-minute walk from the cemetery parking area on Friedhofgasse in Hornstein, with no entrance fee required.
Local residents repurposed stones from the fortress in the 17th century to construct their houses and the village church by 1775.
