Schloss Achau, Medieval water castle in Achau, Austria
Schloss Achau is a castle with four wings and three stories, standing in the center of Achau near the Mödling stream. The structure encloses a rectangular inner courtyard and was originally surrounded by water that protected the entire compound.
The first mention of this structure dates to the 12th century, when it had a simpler form. In 1650, it underwent major rebuilding under Bishop Ulrich Grappler von Trappenburg of Passau, taking on the shape we see today.
The structure shows building elements from different periods, with medieval walls standing alongside alterations from the 17th and 19th centuries. Visitors can observe these layers when entering the courtyard and examining the varying styles of each wing.
The castle sits in the center of the village and is visible from outside, but entering requires care as large sections need renovation. Access to the interior may be limited, so it is advisable to check ahead what is available for visitors.
The entire compound was originally surrounded by water moats, making it one of the few remaining water-protected fortifications in Lower Austria. This water layer provided protection to the buildings over centuries and remains partially visible today.
