Hiller-Kaserne, Military barracks in Ebelsberg district, Linz, Austria
Hiller Barracks is a military complex in the Ebelsberg district of Linz featuring eleven protected buildings erected between 1940 and 1943. The substantial site contains numerous structures arranged across a large area in the southern part of the city.
The barracks were built as a training facility for SS units during the early 1940s and served that purpose throughout World War II. Following the conflict, the site shifted to housing displaced Jewish survivors beginning in 1945.
The complex became known as Camp Star of David after 1947, serving as a community hub where Jewish survivors participated in educational and cultural programs. It represented a place of rebuilding and connection for people beginning new lives after the war.
The site is partially accessible to the public, allowing visitors to explore the exterior grounds even as the structures remain protected monuments. It is best experienced by walking around the grounds and observing the layout of this expansive facility from the outside.
A private foundation acquired the property in 2016 with plans to transform it into a residential community for thousands of new inhabitants. The conversion preserves the protected historical structures while adapting them for contemporary living.
