Schloss Ebelsberg, Medieval castle and military museum in Linz, Austria.
Schloss Ebelsberg is a four-sided castle complex located on Schiltenberg hill with two floors, three towers, and two gates enclosing a trapezoidal inner courtyard. The structure has been rebuilt and expanded multiple times over the centuries, revealing different architectural phases throughout its layout.
The castle was built by Bishop Conrad of Passau around 1154 to expand his influence in Upper Austria, and first documented mention as Ebelesberc dates from this period. Its construction marked the establishment of a major stronghold of episcopal power in the region.
The castle displays weapons and military objects spanning several centuries, with firearms from the 18th century onward and model ships reflecting the Austro-Hungarian naval tradition. These collections show how the region's identity developed through military history.
The castle is accessible by bus and tram from central Linz and offers guided tours as well as escape room experiences. Visitors should allow time to walk through different areas of the complex, and sturdy footwear is recommended for comfortable exploration.
Inside the castle are three detailed dioramas depicting the 1809 Battle of Ebelsberg during the Napoleonic Wars. These miniature scenes show the battle from different perspectives and bring the military events to life in a memorable way.
