Schloss Ebelsberg, Medieval castle and military museum in Linz, Austria.
Schloss Ebelsberg is a four-sided castle on Schiltenberg hill in Linz, Austria, with two floors, three towers, and two gates enclosing a trapezoidal inner courtyard. The building functions today as a military history museum and also hosts special events within its walls.
The castle was built around 1154 by the Bishop of Passau, Conrad, to extend his reach into Upper Austria, and it appears in early records under the name Ebelesberc. Over the following centuries it was rebuilt and extended several times, which explains the mix of architectural styles visible today.
The castle holds a collection of weapons and military objects, with firearms from the 18th century onward alongside model ships that recall the Austro-Hungarian naval tradition. Walking through the rooms gives a direct sense of how military life shaped the identity of this part of Austria.
The castle sits on a hill and can be reached from central Linz by bus or tram. Visitors who want to explore the full grounds should wear sturdy shoes, as some parts of the complex have uneven surfaces.
Inside the castle there are three hand-crafted dioramas depicting the 1809 Battle of Ebelsberg from different angles, each populated with hundreds of tiny figures. The level of detail in these scenes makes it possible to follow the course of the fighting step by step.
