Himmelhof, Scenic viewpoint in Ober Sankt Veit, Austria.
Himmelhof is a scenic viewpoint on elevated ground in Ober Sankt Veit, in the Hietzing district of Vienna. The site combines an open meadow with a radio and television transmitter tower that broadcasts Austrian programs.
The name traces back to a 19th-century dairy farm and inn called Am Himmel. A ski jump operated on the site from 1949 until a fire destroyed it in 1980, ending its use for winter sports.
The name Himmelhof comes from a former inn called Am Himmel, which once gave the area its local identity. Today the site is an open meadow used by people from the neighborhood for walks and leisure.
The viewpoint is on open high ground, so clear days offer the best experience with wide views over Vienna toward Slovakia. There is little shelter from wind or rain, so it helps to come prepared for the weather.
The painter Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach and a group of artists lived and worked in the former inn on this site between 1897 and 1899. Nothing of that building remains today, but the episode is still part of local memory.
