Schloss Brunnwald

Schloss Brunnwald is a hunting castle in Vorderweißenbach, Austria, built from stone and surrounded by forest. A prominent four-story tower rises from the main building and forms the most recognizable feature of the structure.

The Starhemberg family built this hunting residence between 1724 and 1727 as their country estate. A major fire in 1898 destroyed significant portions of the building, triggering extensive reconstruction efforts.

The castle served the Protestant community as a place of worship and later housed a maternity ward after World War II. These roles reveal how a noble residence became woven into the daily needs of local people.

The interior of the castle is not open to visitors, but you can walk around the exterior and explore the forest paths nearby. The surrounding woodland makes it easy to approach the building and enjoy the natural setting.

The castle remains in the hands of the Starhemberg family and operates as a private guesthouse since 1993. This continuity of ownership and purpose across generations makes it unusual among castles that often change hands or become public museums.
