Blaudruckerei Wagner, Traditional textile manufactory and museum in Bad Leonfelden, Austria.
Blaudruckerei Wagner is a working textile workshop and museum in Bad Leonfelden, Austria, dedicated to the traditional craft of indigo printing. The building combines an active printing studio with exhibition areas that display historical equipment and the tools used in the indigo dyeing process.
The workshop was founded in 1878 and the Wagner family has preserved their textile printing tradition through multiple generations. Original methods of pattern creation and dyeing continue to be practiced in the family business according to historical techniques.
The workshop demonstrates the craft of Blaudruck in its full form, with artisans using wooden blocks to print patterns onto natural fabrics and then dyeing them in indigo. Visitors can observe how these traditional techniques are still applied today and understand the role this craft plays in local artisan traditions.
Visitors must arrange appointments in advance by contacting Maria Wagner, as the workshop at Kurhausstraße 11 does not keep regular opening hours. Planning ahead allows time to tour the working studio and see demonstrations of the printing process.
This workshop is one of only two remaining active Blaudruck studios in Austria, continuing centuries-old printing methods in its original location. The fact that the same family has worked at this site since 1878 makes it a living testament to unbroken craft knowledge passed down through time.
