New Bamberg Hut, Mountain hut in Kitzbühel Alps, Austria
New Bamberg Hut is a mountain refuge located on the Salzjoch ridge in the Kitzbühel Alps at about 1,761 meters elevation. The shelter accommodates up to 75 guests and operates year-round for hikers and mountaineers passing through the region.
After the 1919 Treaty of Saint Germain, the original Bamberg Hut in the Dolomites became Italian territory, prompting Austria to establish this new refuge in the Kitzbühel Alps. The site continues to serve mountaineers in its current location.
The hut takes its name from the original refuge that once stood in the Dolomites before it passed to Italy. Today it functions as a gathering place for hikers and climbers who rest here before continuing their mountain journeys.
The hut is reachable from two starting points: a 2-hour hike from Gasthof Wegscheid or a 3.5-hour trek from Gasthof Ronach via the old Gerlos Road. A cable car system assists with transporting guest luggage to the hut at no extra cost.
A cable car system installed in 1962 allows supplies and guest luggage to reach the hut without manual carrying, an unusual feature among Alpine refuges. This infrastructure sets it apart from many similar mountain shelters that still rely on foot transport.
