Salzachgeier, Mountain summit in Kitzbühel Alps, Austria

Salzachgeier is a mountain in the Kitzbühel Alps that reaches approximately 2500 meters in height. The summit marks the boundary between Salzburg and Tyrol provinces, creating a notable landmark in this alpine range.

The Salzachgeier is a double summit: the Western peak reaches 2,469 m and the Eastern 2,466 m, about 300 m apart, where five sharp ridges meet. The lower Eastern summit lies entirely in Salzburg, directly above the Salzachboden and Schwebenalm cirques. The headstreams of the Salzach rise in the cirques and high pastures of the eastern slopes and the neighbouring Fünfmandling (2,401 m) and Schwebenkopf (2,354 m), giving the mountain its name.

The name comes from the Salzach river: its headstreams rise in the cirques and high pastures of the eastern slopes and the neighbouring Fünfmandling and Schwebenkopf. The double summit is a destination for ski tourers in winter and for hikers from the Neue Bamberger Hütte, which belongs to the German Alpine Club.

The best starting point is Gasthof Wegscheid, where hikers begin the roughly 19-kilometer journey to the summit. The Neue Bamberger Hütte sits along the route and provides a rest stop for those needing refreshment.

The Markkirchl is not on the summit but on the state border high above the Roßwildalm, about a kilometre north of the eastern cirques near the Salzachjoch (1,983 m). The chapel and the Neue Bamberger Hütte below it serve the ski tour route from the Kelchsau.
