Große Arnspitze

Große Arnspitze is a mountain summit near Scharnitz that reaches approximately 2,200 meters and features steep rock faces on its flanks. The peak forms a sharp ridge between two valleys with dramatic rocky slopes along its southern aspect.

The mountain gained military importance during the Thirty Years' War when a fortress was built in the 1630s to guard a regional border. Later, a famous trail across the peak was named after Napoleonic forces who discovered a hidden route in the early 1800s.

The mountain serves as a natural boundary between two valleys and draws visitors who want to experience how this landscape shaped local movement and trade routes. The paths reveal how communities historically crossed this high ground to connect with each other.

The climb from Scharnitz is demanding and takes most of a day with significant elevation gain, so proper preparation and mountain experience are important. A mountain hut near the summit provides shelter and supplies for those making the crossing.

Local hunters revealed a secret path to an early military force, which later became one of the most popular routes on the mountain. The trail remains visible today and many mountaineers prefer it as the most interesting crossing over the summit.
