Grosser Peilstein

Grosser Peilstein rises to an elevation of 1,061 meters, forming the highest peak of the Donauwaldviertel region within the Ostrong mountain range.

The mountain paths include the Kaiserweg trail, established under Emperor Franz I during his reign, connecting several notable points across the Waldviertel landscape.

The mountain holds numerous local tales, including stories of a giant fish living in a hidden lake that creates thunder when striking rocks.

Hikers can access multiple marked trails leading to the summit, with the Peilstein-Yspertal trail number 33 offering direct access to viewing points.

The mountain features two distinct peaks, with the smaller Kleine Peilstein reaching 1,024 meters and the main summit offering views over the Danube valley.
