Werndl-Denkmal, Bronze monument in Steyr, Austria
The Werndl Monument is a bronze casting on a gray Mauthausen granite pedestal in Steyr, showing life-size figures of industrialist Josef Werndl alongside various craftsmen including a blacksmith, mechanic, sword maker, and carpenter. The composition represents the connection between the entrepreneur and the skilled workers who built his industrial enterprise.
The monument was unveiled in 1894 to honor Josef Werndl, founder of the Austrian Arms Manufacturing Company, who transformed Steyr into a major industrial center. Its creation marked the peak of recognizing Werndl's influence on the region's economic development.
The inscription 'ARBEIT EHRT' on the granite pedestal reflects how industrial work and craftsmanship were valued in Upper Austrian society. This message was deeply rooted in Steyr's growing manufacturing culture at the time.
The monument stands on the Enrica-von-Handel-Mazzetti Promenade, an easily accessible location in central Steyr along the riverfront. Visitors can explore it during a walk through the city and learn about Steyr's industrial past.
During World War II, authorities removed the monument from its location, and it disappeared for several years. It was reinstalled at its original position on the promenade in 1945, where it has stood since.
