Schloss Hagenau, Renaissance castle in Sankt Peter am Hart, Austria.
Schloss Hagenau is a Renaissance castle in Sankt Peter am Hart, Austria, built with three floors and four towers. Two round towers stand on the south side while two square towers frame the north side, giving the building an asymmetrical shape.
The castle was built in the 16th century and first belonged to the Bishops of Passau before passing to the Dukes of Bavaria and later to the Counts of Ortenburg. In 1635 the Bavarian Elector Maximilian gave the property as a gift to Paul-Anton Freiherr von Handel.
The chapel behind the castle displays Gothic characteristics and has been reshaped over centuries with later Neurenaissance additions. It anchors the spiritual life of the area and connects the estate to the local community.
The castle sits close to Schloss Bogenhofen train station and can be reached on foot from there. Those who want to walk around the grounds should wear sturdy shoes.
Above the entrance the von Handel family crest is still visible, placed there as a reminder of how the property changed hands through a princely gift. This carved detail connects the building directly to the political ties between its owners and the Bavarian court.
