Helmut-Qualtinger-Hof, Municipal housing complex in Döbling, Austria.
Helmut-Qualtinger-Hof is a municipal housing complex in Vienna's Döbling district with 22 buildings and 368 apartments. Three eight-story towers form the core of the development and were the first high-rise structures to appear in this neighborhood.
The site served as a military hospital during World War I and later housed temporary barracks for displaced families after World War II. In 1958, the municipal housing complex was built on this land to provide permanent housing for residents.
The sculpture 'Mother with Child' by Ferdinand Welz occupies a central courtyard space and serves as a focal point for residents. Entrance mosaics created by Rudolf Hausner add artistic character to the building facades and reinforce the complex's identity.
The complex spans across several streets with its main entrance at Daringergasse. Open green spaces between buildings create walking paths and help visitors navigate the site.
Actor and writer Helmut Qualtinger lived here from 1960 and the complex was officially named after him in 1989, decades later. The long gap between his residency and the official naming reflects a forgotten connection that was eventually rediscovered.
